ECW Format

What is ECW?

The enhanced compression wavelet (ECW) file format is a high-performance image-compression format designed specifically for geospatial imagery.  When compared to other image-compression formats, Intergraph’s patented ECW technology provides the fastest decompression and compression rates in the industry. Remarkably, this is done without placing a heavy load on computer memory and processors, while also maintaining high compression ratios and visually lossless image quality.

Compressing 32 terabytes or 14 Terapixels into a 1 terabyte ECW Mosaic

This movie shows the power of ECW Compression! The original ECW file size is 900 GB. This is an extremely large file. The file is not stored on a database; it's just a standard file, on a standard laptop. No server farms are required here! Opening the image is instant. The map display is extremely quick even though its such an enormous image. ECW is Big Data optimization technology, shrinking the unmanageable 38 terabytes down to a more reasonable size!
