Shared Environmental Information System: Clean Air for Europe (SEIS-CAFÉ Pilot)

Café Directive 2008/50/EC requires that European agencies cooperate to exchange air quality data and report on specific values for human health and vegetation using INSPIRE compliant techniques. SEIS-CAFÉ Pilot was conducted to operationally test the feasibility for the exchange, reporting and access to air quality data and information for Europe using INSPIRE services for, discovery, transformation, view and download. The project was done for European Commission Joint Research Centre and stayed within the scope of the environmental requirements of both CAFÉ and INSPIRE Directives. Notable INSPIRE-compliant components include download services established for air quality data reporting, application schemas defined for data publication, database schemas for collecting and publishing of air quality data from core providers, FTP service for uploading, view services, metadata catalogue and a user-friendly geoportal.

City of Chengdu, China

Chengdu is a big city in China, and the Hexagon Geospatial SDI system serves a population of around 10 million.  The solution provides one map covering the whole city; the same map is used for all administration departments.  Maintaining one map for the whole city - instead of each city department maintaining one map as before - has dramatically cut down management and maintenance costs by helping to avoid redundancies and errors.  Overall, this project has led to increased working and administration efficiency, and has streamlined workflows across all related management departments.

Hesse State Planning Portal, Germany

The application is a web portal for state and regional planning purposes (www.landesplanung-hessen.de), and it provides all stakeholders, including non-experts, easy access and visualization of spatial data through an intuitive interface.  Through a simple web browser, the Hexagon Geospatial SDI solution provides direct, real-time access to the enterprise geospatial data, along with spatial analysis and map generation functionality.  The web map services delivered are of particular importance to administration, business and planning experts, who are now able to manage and share standardized data for various functions including state and town planning, transportation, natural resource protection, agriculture and forestry, energy, water, wastewater and waste management.

Nigeria Census Project

Beta Systems Software AG and Intergraph (Germany) GmbH were commissioned with processing and structuring data gathered at Nigeria’s last census in 2006.  As part of the “DBMS/Geoportal for Census Nigeria” project, more than 50 million two-sided DIN A4 census sheets were processed, transferred into a central database, and finally enriched with extensive geo data. The central interface for research, visualization and analysis is a geoportal that makes the georeferenced census data available in an intuitive manner according to the user’s access privileges.   The raster data store represents one of Africa’s largest data repositories; the imagery is stored at different resolutions and make up the bulk of the data totaling 120 terabytes.   Now decision-makers are able to draw on highly useful planning tools that take into account demographic and economic factors.

Briseide

Briseide Geoportal was created by the Czech Center for Science and Society.  It has a map viewer for viewing maps and a catalog client for searching and viewing metadata with a variety of options.  In the catalog client you can use the Briseide catalog or add other catalogs from different sources that may be not listed to search as well.  This project aims at delivering time-aware extension of data models developed in the context of previous/ongoing EU INSPIRE related projects, applications based on the integration of existing, user operational information and value added services for spatio-temporal data management, authoring, processing, analysis  and interactive visualization.

NatureSDI+

NATURE-SDI+ aims at establishing a Best Practice Network dealing with a cluster of the data themes listed in Annexes I and III of the INSPIRE Directive, and focused on nature conservation issues. The establishment of Natura 2000 and the new trans-boundary EU approach for protected sites management has enforced the link between nature conservation and geo-information. This has generated the need for interoperable, accessible and harmonized datasets for the EU.   The main objectives of the Nature-SDI+ Network are to involve new stakeholders, share data and best practices, improve and stimulate exploitation and promote the re-use of information on nature conservation.

IGN, Spain

IGN Spain is uses Hexagon Geospatial’s SDI solution to power SIGNA, the main viewer of IGN geographical data and also the entrance gate to the SDI node containing all the OGC services available. With SIGNA, non-GIS experts can connect to services and download data without any knowledge about SDIs.

GIS4EU, European Union

Stood up EU-wide, the GIS4EU project supports data for the entire continent of Europe. The project's main objective is to increase communication and networking relationships among the project partners to ensure it addresses cross scale, cross language and cross border interoperability and accessibility issues. The project and portal provides base cartography datasets for Europe for administrative units, hydrography, transportation networks, and elevation.

City of Bilbao, Spain

The Bilbao City Council has launched GeoBilbao: a portal serving map-based information and services using Hexagon Geospatial’s spatial data infrastructure (SDI) solution. Internally, it vastly improves data coordination and reuse. Externally, it provides a public access geo-data portal for the municipality. Citizens can now access a diverse set of geo-referenced information including real-time data such as traffic density, parking occupancy rate, video camera feeds, and much more.

City of Legnica, Poland

The City of Legnica is a town in south-western Poland.  Their portal serves map-based information such as municipal boundaries, precincts, building footprints, addresses and other data.  Their SDI participates as a node in the country-wide Poland GeoPortal, also implemented as an Hexagon Geospatial SDI solution.
